New Nude City Review

New Nude City is a megasite featuring the work of photographer Richard Kern. I hadn't really heard of the guy before doing the review, but checking out the About section, it looks like he's been sort of a jack-of-all-trades in the underground art world. He produced fanzines, was a sculptor and artist, shot controversial films and, somewhere along the way, got into erotic nude photography. The description of his stuff seems to promise an edgier, darker side of things which would definitely be a change from most of the other arty photo sites I've reviewed in the past. Let's take a look and see what we got...

The setup at New Nude City looked pretty familiar to me because of the other reviews of erotic art megasites I've done in the past. For some reason, all of these sites seem to have a similar design and feel to them. Another commonality (that New Nude City possesses as well) is that the members area is identical to the free side, the only difference being that once you're logged in you can access the member content. I'm not that big of a fan of that sort of setup but on the plus side, it does give you the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the site before you join and makes my job a bit easier to boot so I can't complain too much. One thing that *is* a bit unusual for sites like this is the cheap pricetag...membership to the site is only $14.95/month which is a great deal.

Anyhow, there are a couple of ways to get at the content here. They have some of the more recent galleries linked up right on the main page but the bulk of the material is accessible through a menu on the left-hand side. To go along with the whole New York City theme, they've named each section in the menu after a different location in The Big Apple (Soho, Wall Street, Times Square, etc.). The only problem I had was figuring out what the location categories meant...and I still really don't know. I guessed either it's 1) actually where the girls in the shoot are from or 2) the theming of type of model in those sets best "fit" that particular location. There's a short description about each zone at the top of each page that sets the mood and flavor for that area. Still, I wasn't entirely sure what the corollary between places and photosets was (although I think #2 is a good bet). Anyway, place names aside, there's also a familiar model index here that lists each girl alphabetically and with a small headshot. That way you can just pick a girl that catches your eye and get started checking her out. They also have a keyword search function to help you find what you're looking for. All told, they've got 155 models, 24,000+ pics and nearly 100 videos here to check out.

Taking a look at the pictures first, I noticed that gallery size seems to vary a bit...anywhere from 15 to 60 to 100 or more pics in each. The photos come in two sizes, 400 x 600 or 900 x 1400 and you can grab high and low quality zip files of each set as well. The picture quality and look seemed to vary a bit which surprised me. Usually these photography sites have impeccable quality throughout. Here though, I found some galleries that were a bit too dark, dingy, or washed out for my liking while still others really looked awesome: well-lit, crisp, and clear. Since there's no real effective way to sort things chronologically, I wasn't sure if it's an older pic vs. newer pic thing or a deliberate effect Kern applies to some of his shoots (although when I mentioned a "darker side of things" earlier, I didn't think it would mean the pics themselves lol). Having said that, I think the photography overall is quite good here but when you compare it to some of the phenomenal standards set by other nude photog sites, it fell a little short for me. Like I said, maybe it's a stylistic thing.

Videos here are all organized together under the Theater tab. You're pretty much just stuck paging through these as there's just a big list of clips in no apparent order. It'd be cool to be able to sort these by model maybe or if the model's videos were also linked from the model index pages (the galleries are), but no dice. They do offer a nice selection of vid options: WMV, Quicktime, or DivX. These are a available for stream or download although of course, the DivX clips need to be loaded fully before playback begins. Specs-wise, both the WMV and DivX files are 400 x 300 with bit rates of 625K and 1100K respectively. The videos look nice. I could bump these up to full-screen without any problem other than a little pixelation. Once again though, things seemed a little darker or more oddly lit than I'm used to so maybe my theory about this just being the photographer's style is correct. I guess it could be described as "arty" which I know a lot of people do enjoy.

As far as subject matter, things here tend toward the softcore with some fetishy stuff thrown in. Mostly, the shoots feature your typical solo posing type stuff but I also saw a few light girl-girl sets, some peeing sets, and some bondage material as well. Other than the arty feel to a lot of the photos, the thing that sets the content here apart is the models. They're much more everyday looking than your typical photography megasite model. This is good in that they have a very real, amateur feel to them (and some are pretty darn cute besides) but be prepared for some homely chicks and some that, quite honestly, look like crack whores. I guess that sort of goes along with the dark, brooding vibe that a lot of the photography on the site possesses.

From what I can tell, most of the extras available here are also available on the free side so you might want to check those out for yourself. They come in the form of a small bookstore, some e-cards and e-books, and a journal that's updated by Kern describing various experiences shooting nudes (nothing's been added since August 2005 however). The e-books are authored by Kern and available for download as .pdf files by members only.

Bottom Line
When compared to some of the other erotic photography sites I've reviewed, New Nude City didn't really do it for me. The quality seemed a bit sub par by comparison and I didn't care for the dark, dingy look (intentional or not) to a lot of the content. Having said that, there's a nice, large archive to check out for a very reasonable monthly fee and while the quality of the content here is something to be viewed objectively, I think the artistic style of Richard Kern's work is something that's pretty subjective. Translation: take a look at our samples and if you'd like to experience the darker (literally and figuratively) side of erotic photography, pay New Nude City a visit.
